It is India’s responsibility to shelter religious minorities

Protests are taking place in Assam and several other states of the Northeast over the Citizenship Amendment Bill brought by the central government. Meanwhile, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav defended the bill, saying such a provision should be made for religious minorities living in neighboring countries. The BJP general secretary said that these people living as refugees in neighboring countries were suffering there. They were discriminated against on religious grounds. It is India’s responsibility to give them citizenship. Under the Citizenship Amendment Bill, non-Muslim people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who are residing in India will be given the status of an Indian citizen instead of an illegal migrant. Ram Madhav retaliated when opposition parties opposed the citizenship bill. He said the Emigrants Act 1950 (exile from Assam) was implemented in the Congress-ruled government by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Citing the Emigrants Act, Ram Madhav said, “I would like to remind those who opposed the Citizenship Bill that Pandit Nehru enacted a similar law in 1950. The law specifically provided for the rescue of minorities in East Pakistan (Bangladesh). Under this law, minorities coming from East Pakistan were given protection under the Bill. It was decided that this law would not apply to him. BJP General Secretary said that India has always given shelter to the oppressed minorities of other countries. He said that there is a provision for granting Indian citizenship to the tortured minorities of neighboring countries under the Citizenship Amendment Bill. These migrant people are suffering the brunt of the historic mistake of dividing the country on the basis of religion. It is the responsibility of India to provide shelter to these minorities.
