Congress MLA Nana Patole has been elected unopposed Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Mahavikas Aghadi, an alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, jointly announced him as the candidate for the post of president. The BJP too had fielded its candidate for the post of speaker, but later withdrew the name. It is noteworthy that Nana Patole is a former BJP MP, but he quit the BJP and joined Congress after resigning from the post of MP, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of dictatorship.BJP, the largest party in the assembly, had named MLA Kishan Kathore for the post of speaker, but the BJP withdrew his name just before the election. The BJP nominated Kishan Kathore, MLA from Murbad assembly seat, as its candidate for the Assembly Speaker election. In 2014, he joined the BJP. BJP leaders said that on the request of the ruling party, he withdrew the name of Kathore. However, after the election of Patole, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that Nana Patole is from a peasant family. He said that I am confident that he will do justice to all.
